Best Practices for Members

An editorial by John R. Carter, Sr., Past President

Do you feel like you’re getting nothing out of your PAC membership? Are the presentations going over your head or not addressing your interests? You’re not alone!

The purpose of giving presentations at our meetings is to educate our members about possibilities. It’s like planting seeds. To actually get into details about any given topic would convert the meeting into a workshop — and workshops typically require hands-on participation with a lot of special attention from the instructor. We prefer to scatter seeds at our meetings rather than get into digging up weeds.

Hence, to get the most out of the meetings it helps to take notes and then go home and do research. Presenter notes are sometimes posted on our website.

How to Get the Most from PAC

🏚 Attend Monthly Meetings

The 1st Wednesday meeting is the heart of the club. It’s also the best place to meet other members, ask questions, and discover new areas of astronomy you may not have considered.

🌟 Join a Special Interest Group

APSIG — Astrophotography: share images and learn techniques.
ABSIG — Astronomy Basics: ideal for newer members.
METASIG — Casual social dinners for members.

🔭 Participate in Star Parties

Bring your telescope or just come to observe. Star parties are where friendships form and skills develop fastest. Even just attending as a visitor is valuable.

📖 Use the Loaner Scope Program

New to telescopes or want to try different equipment? Borrow a club telescope. See the Loaner Scope Program page for available equipment and checkout terms.

🤝 Connect with a Mentor

Experienced members are happy to help with equipment setup, software, observing lists, and astrophotography. Ask at any meeting or contact us through the website.

🏆 Pursue Observing Programs

Your PAC membership includes Astronomical League membership. Take on a structured observing program — Messier, Herschel 400, Double Star — and earn certificates while improving your skills.

Remember: At some point in every presentation, there is something for everyone. The meetings are a field of possibilities — your job is to find the seeds that interest you and go dig deeper on your own.
